Located in the heart of New York City's Greenwich Village, the Washington Square Hotel is situated on historic Washington Square Park.   This haven for writers, artists and visitors to Greenwich Village features a style reminiscent of the 1930’s yet remains in step with the 21st century with amenities such as wireless internet access for its guests.

When the hotel management wanted to upgrade from analog camera surveillance to a digital IP system, they called on BBH Solutions for planning and implementation of the project.  While the hotel’s existing analog cameras were relatively new and of a good quality, the video signals were recorded onto a 24 hour VCR tape which made it necessary to manually rewind through several hours or days of tape to view a single event.   In addition, there was a decrease in image quality as the tapes without significant recorded events were reused.

“We were really looking for a way to continue to utilize our in-place analog cameras,” said Sonny Christopher, general manager of the Washington Square Hotel.  “We had made a big investment in the 12 working cameras, only a short time ago, and we were happy to hear from BBH that they could integrate that equipment into a new IP surveillance system.”

With Axis video server technology, BBH Solutions designed a plan that made it possible to move toward a network video system that included the existing analog cameras.  The servers connect to analog cameras, digitize the images and feed them to the IP network.  New Axis network cameras would connect directly to the IP network.

BBH installed 11 Axis IP cameras which were connected to a Cisco Catalyst Express 500 24-port switch. The existing analog cameras were connected to a 12 port Axis video server.  An HP ProLiant DL380 G5 server with 9 TerraBytes of storage was added to the system to enable the hotel to record up to 30 days of video.

Washington Square Hotel now has a comprehensive Axis IP Surveillance System.  Axis Camera Station Software allows the hotel management to selectively view the digital video feeds from their front office or remotely via web interface.  Searching for events is now easier thanks to the camera station time stamping feature, which can take the viewer to a specific point in time with the click of a mouse.  A 30 day rolling archive of video images on the storage server eliminates the need for manual tape changes.

“We were very pleased with the surveillance solution that BBH designed for us,” said Mr. Christopher.  “We achieved exactly what we wanted by improving our system and maintaining our viable assets.”
